New and Junior Managers
You learn more quickly under the guidance of experienced teachers. You waste a lot of time going down blind alleys if you have no one to lead you.
W. Somerset Maugham
Research sponsored by the Charted Institute of Personnel and Development shows that a front line manager's ability to recruit people with the appropriate skills, motivate them and create opportunities for them to perform, develop and succeed, are crucial for business performance. The grandest strategies cannot be carried out if the front line workforce are unable or unwilling to implement.
Many people new to management roles have been excellent individual contributors and often display a desire to succeed and a core set of delivery competencies which mean they shine. Many become either ineffective or disillusioned because they don't know how to cope with different challenges such as dealing with performance issues, holding productive team meetings and briefings, encouraging others to contribute more, deal with conflicts and conflicting priorities - work with people who may not have the same personalities or competencies they themselves possess.
